Jean Reno is to play Bezu Fache, the police inspector who investigates the death of the Louvre curator in The Da Vinci Code, in the adaptation of the Dan Brown bestseller. The French actor will join Tom Hanks, who will play the lead role of Harvard professor Robert Langdon, and Ron Howard, who will direct. Shooting is to start later this year, in time for a May 2006 release.

But who will play Sophie Neveu, Robert Langdon's sidekick? So far, Julie Delpy, last seen in Before Sunset, has been campaigning hard to get the part, but it seems that the producers have someone else in mind. According to the French broadsheet Le Journal du Dimanche, the producers went to Paris to audition French actors and have come up with a shortlist of six. They are: Sophie Marceau, Audrey Tautou, Virginie Ledoyen (Leonardo DiCaprio's love interest in The Beach), Amira Casar (recently seen in the UK in Catherine Breillat's Anatomy of Hell), Judith Godrèche (previous credits outside France: The Man in the Iron Mask and Ridicule) and Linda Hardy, a former Miss France.

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock are to be reunited on screen, 11 years after working on the action film Speed, in Il Mare (The Sea). This romantic drama, a remake of the Korean film Siworae, follows a lonesome doctor (played by Reeves) and a frustrated architect (played by Bullock) who write love letters to each other, but who discover that they are separated in time by two years. Il Mare will be directed by the Argentinian Alejandro Agresti, who previously worked on Valentín, a drama that was selected at the Toronto film festival in 2002. Filming is to start in March in Chicago.
